Welcome to the Canterbury Tales!

In the Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer vividly portrays the life of his era by creating thirty characters from various social classes. His characters include a virtuous knight, a love-struck squire, a lusty widow, a foul-mouthed miller, and a drunken cook. According to The Prologue, the characters decided to travel together on a fifty-five mile journey from London to the holy shrine of St. Thomas a Becket of Canterbury, England. When they meet up at The Tabard in Southwark at the beginning of their journey, they agree to tell stories to pass the time. The most entertaining storyteller would be rewarded with dinner.
